Watercolours of Fish

Kat Cruickshank

born in northeastern b.c., raised in calgary, alberta. educated here and there but got my art education (for what it's worth) in toronto, ontario. been drawing fish since i was a little kid. art school got in the way of that for a while (it's true! the only fish i drew in art school were doodles in the margins of my notes), but i got back on track approximately 2 years after graduating.

i sold my first fish painting in 1987, my second one in 1989, and got my first large multi-fish commission in 1995. after that, i pretty much decided to get serious about it. i also draw "comix" and there'll be more of those on this site shortly.

in 2001 i illustrated the book Fishing in Bermuda by Graham Faiella, my largest single body of work to date. 30 full colour species plates, executed in watercolour, which i guess you could say is my primary medium. the book was published in 2003 by Macmillan. you can buy it online from your local amazon, or chapters/indigo. this summer i am hoping to be able to offer some copies signed by both Graham and myself. stay tuned.

when not painting fish or pursuing them with rod and reel, i work as a fisheries observer for Archipelago Marine Research, Ltd. this means i spend a lot of time on commercial fishing vessels, monitoring what they catch and what they throw back. perhaps one of these days i'll expand more on this on the site somewhere.

i live in nanaimo, on vancouver island, b.c. with the love of my life, Matt McKay, who in addition to being an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener, also works as a fisheries observer. i never thought i'd meet a man who was as crazy about fish - and in much the same way - as i am. i feel enormously blessed.
