Charley Ray
Uneducated, well, there was high school, he just keeps blundering along, doing what appeals at any particular time. His decades in the steel and forestry industries did little to develop his artistic sensibilities. Figurative work, the female nude, continues to be his main genre (is that how you spell that?). This interest is a result of a glandular development which occurred in his early teens and has never gotten well. Oh well, he does the odd fish or animal, you know, to pay the bills and to sort of hide his obsession.
His studio is at 485 First Street, Sointula. Pretty well open all of the time. "My sculptures are cast in “Hydrostone”, a polymer modified gypsum cement. It is many times harder than ordinary plaster. The faux bronze finish is achieved by painting the pieces with three coats of an acrylic which is loaded with pulverized copper and zinc. The paint is then treated with an acid for the appropriate length of time to achieve the patina. The paint is designed for architectural use and is very weather resistant. If given a bit of protection from the elements, below a house’s eaves or on a patio, these pieces will last indefinitely." |
